王兆南出生于一个贫苦家庭。从小靠帮人家打短工生活。后在军阀队伍中当勤务兵。几年后，离开队伍进厂当工人。抗日战争爆发后，在重庆积极宣传抗日，勇敢地同反动派进行斗争。
