莆田人，唐末迁居潮州府，传至马发为第16代。南宋景炎二年（1277年）元兵围攻潮州城，全家9口殉难。

在城陷之前，其妻汪氏密令三仆携5子突围，3个投奔饶平樟林（今澄海区）外祖汪员外，2个投靠潮阳和平亲友家，至今成为两地马氏盛族。
